IP Basics
Intellectual Property (often just called 'IP') is, as the name suggests, property arising from intellectual creation. An idea is just an idea. Properly protected the idea may become your exclusive and enforceable property.
If your idea relates to a technical invention, e.g. the creation of a new article (a new product), or, a new way to do something (a new process) and you want to protect the way the function is achieved by the elements/steps making up the product/process (as distinct from the way it looks) then you need to consider patent protection.
If you have created a new brand name/logo/3D design etc. that you want to use to identify services/products you offer then you should consider Trademark protection.
If you have created a new aesthetic design in a product, logo or graphics design registration is required to fully legally protect your design.
