Mark has had an interest in science from a young age, which lead him to study Biological Sciences at University College Cork, where he graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Biochemistry, and then went on to complete a PhD in Biochemistry also at UCC in 2001. The tenet of his work during the course of his PhD studies focused on protein-protein interactions of the calcium signalling pathways in Alzheimer’s disease. His research was published in peer-reviewed journals and he also presented his work at conferences in Ireland and abroad. Mark went onto to work as a post-doctoral research fellow in UCC in the areas of genetic imprinting and inherited blindness.
Mark recently had a
research paper published in the journal Placenta in 2009.
Before joining Tomkins in October 2008, he worked for 3 years in a leading Japanese Intellectual Property Law firm in Osaka, Japan.
Mark also published a book in 2009 entitled “Shorebirds of Ireland” (Collins Press, Cork) which showcases a selection of his
wildlife photography . Mark was a guest on
RTE Radio 1’s Mooney programme on 4 December 2009 where he and his co-author discussed the book with Derek Mooney.
